Jacques Hnizdovsky (American 1915-1985) Willow (Tahir 51). woodcut, 1964, signed, dated, titled, and annotated 40/100, signed in pencil by Hnizdovsky. This woodcut was created for a book of Poems of John Keats, published in 1964 by Thomas Y. Crowell Co., NY.
Old tape on back, toning to mat and print, some very faint, minor spotting on paper. Larger print than that of the smaller woodcut for the book (7.5 by 5 inches). This copy measures 12.5 by 9 inches on deckled, hand laid Japanese mulberry paper. A fine work. His larger works generally sell for the $2,000-$3,000 price range. An early work.
The smaller version sold for $650 not including buyers’ premium.
Larger woodcuts required weeks or months of intricate cutting before printing. Hnizdovsky would print five to ten trial proofs, refining each image, and then proceed to print an edition of approximately 25 artist’s proofs. The final limited and numbered edition would contain between 100 to 150 prints. For his woodcuts and linocuts, Hnizdovsky favored washi, a Japanese paper that is hand made from mulberry bark. This fine, handmade paper is characterized by its irregularities and like raw silk, its beauty lies in its irregularity and inclusions, often pieces of bark or twigs.
Hnizdovsky focused on his love of nature, flora, and fauna. He was inspired by Durer, by Japanese printmaking and by Chinese brush painting. Hnizdovsky’ s striking style can be easily recognized by its harmonious blend of angular and curved lines, with textures developed by repetitions of patterns.
Hnizdovsky was invited to participate in the Contemporary U.S. Graphic Arts exhibition which traveled to the U.S.S.R. in 1963, as well as a similar exhibition to Japan in 1967. His woodcuts were included in the Triennale Internazionale della Xilographica in Italy in 1972. He had more than a hundred one-man exhibitions and participated in official American traveling exhibitions to the former Soviet Union, China and Japan.
Notes: Light toning to print and matting. Comes unframed.
