Item Description

The City of Cologne, engraved by M.J. Sterling, drawn by William Leighton Leitch. Undated Original Gravure. The City of Cologne, engraved by M.J. Sterling by William Leighton Leitch.

William Leighton Leitch (2 Nov 1804 – 25 April 1883) was a master Scottish landscape watercolour painter and illustrator. He was Drawing Master to Queen Victoria for 22 years. He was Vice President of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolors, on Pall Mall in London, for twenty years.

“"The City of Cologne" in all its grandeur. Engraved by M. J. Sterling, this masterpiece captures the essence of this historic German city on the banks of the majestic River Rhine. The image depicts a picturesque cityscape with towering churches and cathedrals that dominate the skyline. The intricate details etched into each building highlight the architectural beauty that defines Cologne. The prominent cathedral stands tall, its spires reaching towards the heavens, while other charming houses line the riverbank. Boats can be seen gracefully gliding along the river, symbolizing centuries of trade and commerce that have shaped this vibrant city. This engraving transports us back in time to an era when boats were essential for transporting goods and fostering economic growth. The artist's skillful rendering brings life to every stroke, capturing not just physical structures but also a sense of history and culture within these walls. It is evident that Leitch was deeply inspired by Cologne's rich heritage as he meticulously recreated it through his artistry. This print serves as a window into Cologne's past, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in its timeless charm. Whether you are drawn to historical architecture or simply appreciate fine craftsmanship, this engraving offers a glimpse into one of Germany's most iconic cities - a true testament to human ingenuity and artistic expression.” Media Expressions Quote.
