Gordon Bryan Compton (1920-2003) Promoted to Major near end of the war, shot down 5 enemy aircraft, crash landed one plane due to engine failure. During World War II, Gordon Compton became a U.S. Army Air Forces ACE, credited with shooting down 5.5 enemy aircraft in aerial combat. He left military service briefly after the war, but re-joined the Army Air Forces in 1946, and subsequently transferred to the new U.S. Air Force. He retired in 1968 as a U.S. Air Force Colonel. Later served in Vietnam, earning a Legion of Merit, and three distinguished flying crosses.
