Item Description

Wilbur Butcher Webb (June 14, 1920–April 9, 2002) Credited with shooting down 7 enemy fighter pilots. Recommended for the Congressional Medal of Honor. Battle of the Philippine Sea, also known as the “Great Marianas Turkey Shoot.” Wilbur B. “Spider” Webb was there. Webb was born on June 14, 1920, in Ardmore. He enlisted in the Navy in 1938 and was later assigned to the USS Oklahoma. On Dec. 7, 1941, the ship was attacked by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor; Webb escaped the sinking ship by going through a porthole. In 1943, Webb earned his Navy wings as an enlisted pilot and later qualified on the Grumman F6F Hellcat carrier-based fighter plane. On June 19, 1944, Webb flew with squadron VF-2 from the USS Hornet and attacked the Japanese airfield on Guam. During the assault, he radioed to his fellow pilots, “I have 40 (Japanese) planes surrounded and need a little help.” The gun camera film on Webb’s Hellcat jammed between the sixth and eighth Japanese aircraft he made runs on. He became an ace-in-a-day with six victories and two probables. For this action, Admiral Marc Mitscher recommended Webb for the Congressional Medal of Honor. In 1958, Wilbur B. Webb retired from the Navy as a chief aviation pilot. He was designated as the most highly decorated enlisted man in the Navy during World War II.
