Item Description

First day cover of the Mercury Seven Astronauts 40th reunion signatures of moon astronauts Ed Mitchell and Al Worden RARE! Both astronauts have passed: Edgar Dean "Ed" Mitchell (September 17, 1930 – February 4, 2016) and Alfred Merrill Worden (February 7, 1932 – March 18, 2020). Astronaut Worden was commander of the moon orbiting module and Astronaut Mitchell was on the moon surface. They both had been involved in a First Day Covers controversy with NASA and ultimately hearings at Congress. The covers were (a portion of them) were taken on the flight and some were on the surface of the moon and brought back to earth to be sold on behalf of all the astronauts kids for a scholarship fund. NASA found out about it and essentially banned the astronauts from ever flying again, forcing retirement and essentially blackballing the team for life. All were reprimanded, forced into retirement, or downgraded at NASA until they retired. Al Worden became the Chairman of the Mercury Seven Scholarship fund and Mitchell as well participated in the fund. NASA made no provisions for the astronauts families in the future, the fund was set up in order to provide some cushion for all the astronauts families and children. This is a rare item. Worden was also a stamp collector himself. This item is reserved by the consignor. It is a rare and difficult to find pair of signatures on a significant event to benefit the families of the astronauts, which the US Government and NASA failed to provide any benefits whatsoever. Only if the astronauts died in service of NASA.

Shipment: Add $4.00 to USPS costs within USA. Overseas, contact us.

Notes: As received from Astronauts signed. See photos. Not graded.
