Masajiro "Mike" Kawato (1925-was a Japanese fighter ace in World War II. He is known for shooting down Colonel Pappy Boyington's plane: Shooting down Boyington. On January 3, 1944, Kawato shot down Boyington's plane while flying near New Britain Island. Boyington bailed out over the ocean and was picked up by a Japanese submarine. Kawato was shot down during a kamikaze run near the end of the war. He floated in the ocean for three days, washed ashore on New Britain, and hid in the jungle for months. Kawato returned home four months after Japan surrendered and resumed flying as a test pilot and commercial airliner pilot.
