Powers, Harry William (1880-1957): Signs as: Harry Powers.
Landscape of a home in New England in the Fall. Oil on board, signed lower right “Harry Powers”.
“A considerable number of the young members of the Lynn Art Club whose work has received commendation from critics capable of classifying excellence with excellence are, as a matter of course, engaged in occupations that bear a relation to the avocation of the art. As a leading instance, Harry W. Powers, well known as a sign painter and decorator, has also developed the aesthetic talent to an unusual degree: and has found time at intervals between the more practical concerns of life to reproduce on canvas the woods and fields and streams with which the environment of Lynn abounds.
Mr. Powers, who is the son of William D. Powers, veteran of the Civil War, was born in Lynn April 27, 1880. The blending of colors always interested him, and from boyhood he has devoted most of his time and attention to the work of a painter, now in the industrial, now in the fine art. Though this artist depends almost wholly upon nature as a guide, he has also made a critical study of art in which he first became interested in 1906, when he studied in life classes with Joseph L. George of Boston. He is one of that company of enthusiastic artists who first became interested in the Lynn Art Club movement and is the vice president of that organization.
His work has variety, but Mr. Powers gives special attention to landscape painting. The subjects of most of his pictures have been gathered in Lynn, Marblehead, Saugus, Salem pastures, the marshes Swampscott and Nahant; also, along the Merrimac river in houseboat, where he has spent many holidays and weekends in study, together with Paul W. Rowell, Peter MacLardie and Fred Oliver. “Lynn Artists and Their Work,” Daily Evening Item, Lynn, Massachusetts, April 1912.
He was a charter member, organizer, and past vice president of the Lynn Art Club. He was also a charter member of the Marblehead Arts Association and one of the oldest members of the North Shore Arts Association.
