A death mask with some possible association to the poet/artist Juan Ramon Jimenez in remembrance of the St. Martin attack by the Spanish Republicans that he and his wife supported during 1936. Carved and painted with a signature in white paint on the reverse. Carved and painted possibly by the artist out of palm wood with sourced animal teeth.
Juan Ramón Jiménez Mantecón (Spanish pronunciation: [xwan raˈmoŋ xiˈmeneθ manteˈkon]; (23 December 1881 – 29 May 1958) was a Spanish poet, a prolific writer who received the 1956 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his lyrical poetry, which in the Spanish language constitutes an example of high spirit and artistic purity".
One of Jiménez's most important contributions to modern poetry was his advocacy of the concept of "pure poetry". He is heralded as one of the greatest Spanish poets. His verse is lyrical and pure, praised by many of his contemporaries.
Unfortunately, despite at times the beauty of his words and poems, he had a fascination, almost to the point of a psychosis, of death and had a morbid fixation surrounding death. He was also an artist, studying painting and other arts at university in his younger days.
This handmade and sculpted piece was acquired in an estate auction and sourced from Coral Gables, Florida, where Juan Ramon Jimenez and his wife lived and both taught at the University of Miami for a period, while he travelled and taught in and around the United States. The move to the United States was shortly after his siding with the Republicans during the Spanish Civil War. He and his wife left Spain in 1936, shortly after the siege of St. Martin by the Republicans in their campaign to defeat the Spanish Army that supported the Royal family.
Throughout his life and his associations with figures like Ezra Pound, Robert Frost, and Ernest Hemmingway and many others, as well as other artists, death, poetry, and the meaning of the ‘turn of the phrase’ and the fragility of life, were a passionate theme throughout his life.
