Philip Standish Read
Born: 1927 - Dobbs Ferry, New York
Died: 2000 - West Palm Beach, Florida
Known for: Abstract easel and mural painting, commercial art.
Philip Standish Read was born in Dobbs Ferry, New York and trained at the Art Students’ League and the Académie Julian. After relocating to the Palm Beaches, Read designed at least one program cover for the Palm Beach Heart Ball, as evidenced by clippings on the reverse of one of his Venetian fantasy gouaches.
Read’s Venetian-inspired murals became quite popular in Palm Beach and throughout the nation, and he was a well-known, well-liked artist whose work still enhances several Palm Beach collections, including the restaurant Chez Jean Pierre.
In an interview with Read in the Palm Beach Post, written by Judith Clemence, May 2, 1972, the artist stated that “painting murals isn’t always fun,” as it entailed back-breaking work. He also revealed that he had studied murals prodigiously throughout Europe.
Read’s collectors included Gloria Vanderbilt Cooper, Jerry Lewis, and the Rockefellers. He exhibited at the Flair Galleries (directed by Ken Lloyd) in Palm Beach; Ann Jacob’s gallery in Marietta, Georgia; Tiffany’s and Cartier’s in New York; and his murals were featured in major magazines including House and Garden. Peggy Guggenheim, Max Ernst, and Jean Cocteau considered him a friend.
