Claire de Lune Vase with a Phoenix and an Apocryphal Chien-Lung or Quin-Long (1736-1795) specific mark of the Great Qing Dynasty (1644–1911) or later; 7.25 inches tall with engraved winged Phoenix. More likely 19th Century or very early 20th Century vase. Glaze is particularly nice which more modern apocryphal vases of this type do not have by a long shot.
Closely incised foot rim with light traces of iron shading on inside of the foot rim at spots. The neck has a firing flaw and a crack visible under UV light. The light blue glaze has brush marks in striations around the body. Three engraved phoenixes each have a slightly different pattern, indicating they were not ‘stamped’ but cut by hand. The glaze has the ‘sung glaze’ feel of a smooth, glassy, almost oily touch. Occasional black spots in the glazed body surface as well as in the porcelain, cleanly carved foot rim, showing slight to no fluorescence under UV light (most modern reproduction have a UV signature, this one doesn’t). Signature is not perfect; well, most things aren’t when working in a factory.
The minor firing flaws all point to a relatively variable firing environment, as well as the small black spots indicative of coal and wood fired kilns. Modern reproductions would have a more consistent surface firing, no black specks, and no iron contamination or slight coloration in the foot rim.
Provenance: Stair Gallery Auctions: August 2024: Base cost including shipping: $220.00. It will not be sold for less than its base estimate price.

Well, here is a case where the auction house really blew the estimated value. Had no one been paying attention, this small gem of a vase, called a ‘Claire de Lune’ from the Qing Dynasty, late 19th century, none the less, would have gone to some lucky bidder for an appalling low price.
Certainly, something well below the final sale price of $444,500 including buyer’s premium. The estimate was $1,500 to $2,500. Hindman auction: March 2024.
