Potsdam, Kiepenheuer (circa 1920). 23.7: 15.4 cm. 28 hand-colored images. Original bound sheepskin over paper boards with title in gold embossing on the spine and hand sewing. 100 copies in limp vellum (even though this copy is numbered 139).
As described on the last page of the book in German: “2nd printing of the series “The Old Picture Book”, ed. by Kurt Pfister. - Hand press printing by Hoboken-Press, Berlin. on Zanders laid paper in 350 numbered copies. This copy is numbered No. 139 - The text, printed throughout the liturgy in red and black, brings the passion story of the Gospel of John in the translation of Luther's September Bible (1522). The woodcuts "are a beautiful and impressive example of southern German late Gothic draftsmanship." The hand-coloring was done by Hermann Silwar, Berlin.
