Captain Hugn N. Batten Born in Huntington West Virginia, October 17, 1923, died 1990. Naval Academy, 1942. Checked out in F4F Wildcats and F6F Hellcats and in December 1944 joined VF-83 which would go aboard the USS Essex in early 145 as part of the Carrier Task Force 58. First combat mission, March 19, 1945 and as the formation passed over Kure Naval Base , 25 to 30 enemy fighters were sighted. Batten and wingman, Lt. (jg) Samuel Brocato tied into a formation of Jack fighters and using mutual support tactics took down two enemy aircraft, apiece. Next off Okinawa, April 1, 1945, spotted a formation of Zekes headed for the fleet and each pilot, Brocato and Batten downed 4 enemy aircraft, earning the Navy Cross for both pilots. Last mission over central Kyushu, Japan on July 28th, 1945. Captain Batten went on to fly in Korea and Vietnam. He was awarded 2 Distinguished Flying Crosses in addition to the Navy Cross.
