During the Kangxi period, the habit of adding reign marks on porcelain not commissioned by the emperor was known to have been addressed and forbidden by public edicts. It is likely that this is an example of one of these Imperial marks. However, it is apocryphal and probably done in the late Qing period as 4 Character marks during the time of the Emperor are quite rare. While an excellent vase, nearly all the early Kangxi vases with 4 character marks are now in institutional hands. Think of this as the 'son of Kangxi' as someone wanted to emulate the potters that made porcelains exclusively for the Emperor. If it were from this period, the price would be astronomical!
