William Caleb Loring was educated at Boston Latin School and graduated from Harvard College in 1839 (entered 1836), and from the Law School in 1841. Was admitted to the bar in 1842.

After some years in his father’s office, he opened one of his own. His law gradually gave way to a trustees’ business and to active concern in manufacturing. He was president of the Plymouth Cordage Company, founded in 1824 by Bourne Spooner and Caleb Loring. He lived in Boston and at Pride’s Crossing where he built a summer home in 1852; after 1872 he lived there all the time. His love of nature was great, and he developed his estate beautifully.
