1800s CDV of Captain Schwensen who piloted the steamship Westphalia periodically from 1868 until 1882. He set up a fund for the orphans of another ship disaster (probably the Borussia which sank with 200 lives lost in 1879 in a gale after taking on water during the storm) which was also run by the shipping company, Hamburg America Line. This CDV photo is a rarity and done by Georg Wolf & Company of Hamburg, Germany. Reverse is signed ‘Capt. Schwensen, Januar 1879’ with an underline. Extensive information is available on the steamship online.
