Item #65965
Lot #11 of 426
Item Description

Shrink-wrapped map (been that way for decades) has excellent color and exhibits very minor age-appropriate wear ... there is no paper loss .... there are a couple of short (1/4" closed tears at margins ... at folds .... interior of map proper integral, intact, clean and unmarred. Overall, Fine/Excellent condition. It does not have the envelope in which it was originally packaged. Measures 33.25" x 23.25" to the outer edges of the decorative border.

Shurtleff, together with Helen McMillin, hugely influenced female participation in what is known as "The Golden Age of American Pictorial Cartography" (1920s-40s). It was one of her earlier works and is significant for both its scarcity and the role she played in that particular niche of the industry. The map itself is a combination of geographic information integrated with a comic-based pictorial of the lore, legend and history of NH. Shurtleff was a native of Concord, NH and attended the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts. The border is decorated - replete - with the seals and coats of arms of various NH schools of note and townships. Tons of detail. Rarely is something so important so much fun! You could study it for almost forever and keep coming up with some new detail you hadn't seen before.
