Provenance: This piece comes from the historic Ives Family Estate. The Ives family came to America from England. Although there were several notable members, the one who is the most famous is Charles Edward Ives - A classical music composer who is in the same caliber as the most renowned classical composers known today. This sketch was made by Richard Goodman Ives, nephew of Charles Edward Ives.
In the historical sense, crewel embroidery is simply embroidery done with wool threads. Crewel work has a rich history, stretching at least as far back as the early Medieval period, with one of the most extant historical examples being the Bayeux Tapestry.
