William Hole, one of the earliest English engravers, created an engraved map of Scotland for William Camden's Britannia. The map, titled "Scotia Regnum," first published in 1607 with Latin text.
Hole's double-page map of Scotland was based on the Mercator map of 1595 and the work of Saxton. John Speed's "The Kingdom of Scotland" followed Hole's map.
Britannia, first published in 1586, tells the history of Britain from pre-Roman times. However, it was not until the 1607 edition, shortly before his death, that Camden included maps of English and Welsh counties, as well as maps of Ireland and Scotland. Britannia was the first British atlas to feature a separate map of Scotland, making this the first map of Scotland made by an Englishman in England.
The map measures 17.75" x 16.5" and is part of a private collection in Manhattan
