The Chancay civilization was an ancient civilization that existed in the valleys of Fortaleza, Pativilca, Supe, Huaura, Chancay, Chillón, Rimac and Lurín, located on the central coast of Peru. Ceramics played a significant role in the Chancay culture, and their pottery has been discovered mainly in the cemeteries of the Ancon and Chancay valley. The Chancay civilization used moulds to produce ceramics on a large scale. However, their artisans also crafted open vessels with over 400 unique drawings, which are yet to be decrypted. The ceramics were made with a rough matt surface that was painted with a dark color, usually black or brown, on top of a lighter cream or white background. This technique is known as black-on-white.
