Original George Chinnery (1774-1852) " Water Bearers" Pen and Ink drawing.
The paintings of George Chinnery, in addition to their evident artistic value, are of significant historical worth, given that he was the only Western painter in residence in South China between the early and mid-19th century. Chinnery's works vividly depict the life and struggles of ordinary people and the landscape of the Pearl River Delta during that period. Notably, his portraits include the Scottish opium traders, William Jardine and James Matheson, as well as Harriet Low, the diarist.

Chinnery's drawings have garnered substantial attention in various regions of the world. The Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum in London house extensive collections of his works. The Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, also boasts a notable collection of Chinnery's drawings. Other significant groups of his works are held in Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery in the UK, the Hong Kong Museum of Art, and the Macau Museum, including the Macau Museum of Art. The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, in particular, has a noteworthy corporate collection of Chinnery's works.
