Jean-Édouard Vuillard was a French painter, printmaker, and decorative artist who was an influential member of the avant-garde artistic group Les Nabis from 1891 to 1900. Vuillard's paintings were renowned for their unique style of assembling areas of pure color, while his interior scenes explored the spatial effects of flattened planes of color, pattern, and form, influenced by Japanese prints. As a decorative artist, Vuillard designed theater sets, panels for interior decoration, and stained glass. After Les Nabis disbanded, Vuillard adopted a more realistic style and began approaching landscapes and interiors with greater detail and vivid colors in his work. In the 1920s and 1930s, he painted portraits of prominent figures in French industry and the arts in their familiar settings, showcasing his range of skills. Throughout his career, he was influenced by post-impressionist painters such as Paul Gauguin.
