Margaret May Dashiell was originally from New Orleans. She later moved to Richmond, Virginia, where she became a prolific artist, illustrator and writer. Her most notable works are her drawings and watercolors depicting African-American domestic workers, street vendors, and Confederate veterans from the late 19th century through the 1940s.
Dashiell was a well-known member of Richmond's upper class and was friends with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Ellen Glasgow. She was a suffragist and owned a shop on Adams Street where she imported and sold European art prints, engravings, books, and antiques. Dashiell was familiar with the African-American domestic workers who were an important part of Richmond's society.
