Fairy Tales- Hans Christian Andersen, The enchanting fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen have been for many years a source of delight to children of all countries. In this volume, which contains all of the best~loved tales plus many lesser~known ones, twenty~five children from eighteen nations ~ inspired by the stories Hans Christian Andersen tells so well~ have contributed unusual and brilliant illustrations for such classics as The Ugly Duckling, The Emperor's New Clothes, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, Thumbelina and The Little Mermaid. These paintings were chosen from entries to a contest sponsored by the International Union for Child Welfare and its affiliate, Red Barnet of Denmark, a contest in which young artists of forty~eight countries participated by sending their work to a large exhibit held in Copenhagen. The illustrations selected for this de luxe edition of Andersen's tales come from the brushes of young contestants (between the ages of four and fifteen) from such remote corners of the earth as Japan, Morocco and Uruguay, as well as from European and American countries. Two of them are the work of American children ~ a four~year~old and a nine~year~old. All of them have a revealing and uninhibited charm: a Japanese child depicts The Little Mermaid as an oriental creature swimming in a sea of fish, while a Swedish youngster sees her as a lively blonde, ready to begin a dance full of Nordic love of sun and color; a twelve~ year~old Swiss child places The Little Match Girl in a perfect winter setting while a ten~year~old from Morocco, who has certainly never seen snow, envisions it as a kind of star dust against a black sky ~ it is a snow that never reaches the green grass. These unusual and striking examples of children's art, together with forty~ two tales by the most popular children's writer of all time, combine to make a unique volume, timeless in content, original in this handsome presentation.
