Stunning straw work picture by Tun Shein, Burma (now Myanmar), circa 1970s, natural and dyed straw against a black fabric backing, depicting a stylized bird seated among tulips above a large heart, within a circular aperture surrounded by rayed spandrels, sight size 15-1/8" x 15-1/8", housed under glass in the original handmade inlaid wooden frame measuring 17-1/8" x 17-1/8" overall, signed at lower center (in straw!) "Tun Shein, Burma."
A striking, beautiful, and exceptionally skillful example of this distinctive folk art medium. Though little is known of the artist, other dated and inscribed examples of his work indicate that he was active in Rangoon in the 1970s. While most of Tun Shein's work depicts notable locations around what was then Burma, the present example, startling in its close resemblance to early Pennsylvania folk art, indicates that it might have been inspired by a print source in a book, etc., or perhaps even produced on commission.
Notes: CONDITION: In very fine condition, with no evident defects (not examined outside frame).
