Terrific vintage folk art sculpture of a fresco (shaved ice) vendor with pushcart, Haitian, mid-to-late 20th century, the polychromed pale red clay body hand-modeled as a dark-skinned male figure in bright red shirt and yellow trousers, his three-wheeled card laden with a block of ice, shaver, cups, and a profusion of colorful syrup bottles, the front reading "FRESCO," approx. 6-3/4" x 5-1/2" x 3".
Though various forms of shaved ice are enjoyed thoughout North America, Central America, South America, Asia, and the Middle East, "fresco," the version most closely associated with Haiti, includes such flavors as anisette, menthe, sirop d’orgeat, and grenadine, and sometimes features peanuts as an ingredient.
Notes: CONDITION: A few tiny rough spots to edges of base, and unobtrusive loss to top of one bottle, otherwise in very good, attractive condition. (Note that the white spots at the fingertips are tiny dabs of paint meant to denote fingernails.)
