VINTAGE FIGURAL STUDIO POTTERY WALL MIRROR BY EMILY ROSSHEIM, VERMONT, LATE 20TH CENTURY

VINTAGE FIGURAL STUDIO POTTERY WALL MIRROR BY EMILY ROSSHEIM, VERMONT, LATE 20TH CENTURY

Item #1267
Lot #128 of 153
Item Description

Scarce and stunning wall mirror by Emily Rossheim, Hinesburg, Vermont, late 20th century, gray-brown stoneware with mixed clays (including scroddled), depicting a bearded man in a long striped cloak, holding a cloth sack (evidently depicting Joseph and his coat of many colors from the Old Testament), the irregular oval aperture with affixed mirror measuring approx. 7" x 4", the overall size approx. 13-1/2" x 9-1/4", the back incised "Emily Rossheim, Hinesburg, Vt."

A particularly striking and skillfully executed example from this highly respected, widely exhibited studio potter. Most of the pictorial elements, which stand out in slight relief, are accomplished with clays of different colors rather than glazes or painted effects; the striping of the cloak, for example, was produced entirely by "scrodding" layers of differently colored clays, and the contrasts between hair and skin were similary accomplished.

While Rossheim is best known for her thinly potted bowls, items of this nature are quite unusual.

Notes: A few tiny, unobtrusive rough spots to edges (noted for strict accuracy), otherwise fine, attractive condition.
