V. A. Scott (American, early 20th century): "Municipal Group, Springfield, Massachusetts," pencil on off-white paper mounted to artist's board, signed and dated at lower left "V. A. Scott '28," image size 11-1/2" x 8-3/8"; housed under glass in the original painted wooden frame measuring 14-3/4" x 11-5/8" overall.
An exquisitely precise and detailed rendering of this distinctive Springfield landmark, including two Model A or similar automobiles in the street in front. Designed by the firm of Pell & Corbett and completed in 1913, the complex comprises two identical Greek Revival buildings (one serving as City Hall, the other an auditorium) centered by an Italian campanile clock tower with twelve-bell carillon. Though the buildings fell into increasing disrepair by the beginning of the 21st century, major renovations and improvements largely returned the individual buildings to their original splendor.
Notes: CONDITION: Scattered surface wear to frame; light uniform toning to sheet; a touch of very subtle, minor rippling to left edge of sheet; otherwise fine, clean, attractive condition (not examined outside frame).
