Uri Roth (Czech-Israeli, born 1927): "Mother and Child," carved olive wood, incised on the base "Uri Roth" with Roth's name also added in Hebrew, the overall dimensions approx. 14-1/2" x 5-1/4" x 4-1/8".
Roth, born in Munkatz, Czechoslovakia, was deported from that town's ghetto to Auschwitz in 1944 and liberated in the following year. After Roth's emigration to Israel, he studied under artists Yechiel Shemi and Marcel Yanco. His first exhibition, held in Tel-Aviv, resulted in a scholarship that allowed him to continue his art studies. He ultimately devoted himself to carving, both as an independent artist and for the firm of Hayadith in Pardess-Hanna. The present example is characteristic of Roth's modernist style, which incorporates elements of both abstraction and brutalism.
CONDITION: Natural inclusions and irregularities natural to wood, otherwise fine, attractive condition, with no breaks or losses, retaining a pleasing, untouched original patina.
