Lot of two charming antique plates from the Les Vocations series by Sarregumines, Digoin, France, early 20th century, faience with basketweave molding to the rim, hand-painted blue bands, one featuring a black transfer image of a young boy playing with a toy train as three men look on, together with the caption "Si j'avais de la fortune, j'en ferais un ingénieur" [If I had any luck, I would make him an engineer], the other featuring a young boy seated on a table playing a trumpet with one hand and a drum with the other as his father rest his hand on the boy' head as the mother looks on, together with the caption "Il a la bosse de la music" [He has the music bump], 7-1/8" in diameter, both with the full "Digoin & Sarreguemines, France" crown-and-shield mark.
The caption on the second plate, which at first may seem nonsensical, is apparenty a reference to phrenology—the Victorian pseudoscience of "reading" the bumps on one's head—as indicated by the placement of the man's hand.
