RARE VINTAGE COOKIE JAR BY ARVAL R. SANDERS, HOT SPRINGS, ARKANSAS, CIRCA 1970s

Rare and fabulous vintage cookie jar by Arval R. Sanders, Hot Springs, Arkansas, circa 1970s, the hand-thrown off-white clay body of bold bulbous form with rounded shoulder, two lug handles, and central raised band, the lid with shaped finial, approx. 11" tall overall, the base incised, "Sanders [in outline of barn], Original, ARS."

Sanders (1934–2009), originally a fireman by trade, learned to throw pottery while moonlighting at Dryden Pottery, finding the work so agreeable and becoming so skilled at the wheel that, after remaining with the company for several years, he struck out on his own as a potter, the period from which this pot evidently originates. Quite scarce in this form and generous size; I was unable to find another example either from Dryden or from Sanders' own studio. A true treasure for the collector of Arkansas or mid-century pottery!

CONDITION: Small, unobtrusive glaze flake to finial (not affecting clay body; noted for strict accuracy), and tiny glaze skip to side of body, otherwise fine, beautifully preserved condition.
