Rare original advertising ashtray from Hugo Kasseker, Automotive Repair and Motorcycle Driving School, Waldenburg-Altwasser, Germany, circa 1910s–1920s, porcelain with black transfer and hand painting, 6-1/2" x 5-1/2" x 2-1/4", the underside impressed "349" and marked "Germany."
A handsome and unusual example with a distinctive Secessionist-influenced style. The advertising text, with loose translation, reads as follows:
"Hugo Kasseker, Kraftfahrzeuge Reparatur, Zubehör, Betriebsstoffe, Telefon 289, Waldenbg.-Altwasser, Betriebsfahrschule Klasse I für Motorräder"
"[Hugo Kasseker, Motor Vehicle Repair, Accessories, Lubricants, Telephone 289, Waldenburg-Altwasser, Class I Driving School for Motorcycles]."
The large size of the rests suggests that the ashtray was originally intended to accommodate cigars (though of course could also be used for cigarettes). Rare; I was unable to locate a single other example.
Notes: A few small losses to lettering (which is printed on both sides), otherwise fine, attractive condition, with no cracks, chips, crazing, or staining
