Marcia Brown (American, 1918 ā2015): Sparrow and Peonies [in the Chinese Style], watercolor on fibrous off-white paper, circa 1970sā1980s, signed at lower left "Marcia Brown" with two additional red chop marks or seal devices, sight size 10" x 7", presented under glass in a mat and silver-toned aluminum frame measuring 14.25" x 11" overall.
Brown, who studied at the Woodstock School of Painting, New York College for Teachers (now SUNY Albany), and New School for Social Research at Columbia University, is best remembered as an illustrator of children's books, in which capacity she was a three-time winner of the prestigious Caldecott Medal, for Cinderella (1954), Once a Mouse (1961), and Shadow (1983). Beginning in the 1970s Brown fostered a growing interest in Chinese brush painting and pursued formal studies in its history and techniques at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou, China. Her original works are quite uncommon on the market.
Notes: Light wear to frame; a bit of very faint, subtle soiling to mat; otherwise fine, clean, attractive condition overall (not examined outside frame)
