HANDMADE VINTAGE JAPANESE MARQUETRY WALL PLAQUE, "ENJOY YOURSELF," EARLY 20TH CENTURY

Stunning vintage marquetry wall plaque, Japanese, early 20th century, contrasting inlaid woods, the tall rectangular form featuring the motto "Enjoy yourself, it is later than you think" in faux-Japanese letters arranged in vertical format above a lake scene with two boats against a background including a pagoda, bridge, and mountains, all contained within a border of bamboo rods lashed together at the corners, the plaque with ebonized beveled edge, hanging chain on reverse, the overall dimensions 19-5/8" x 9-7/8" x 1/2".

A beautifully made and particularly striking example, evidently produced for the English-speaking export market.

Notes: CONDITION: Mild surface wear (some faint, superficial scuffing and subtle scratching; small, unobtrusive dent to blank portion near bottom edge), otherwise near fine, attractive condition, with no breaks, warping, or losses to inlay, and retaining a rich, pleasing patina.
