Francis Wenderoth Saunders (American, 1901–1992): The Gardner-Pingree House, Designed by Samuel McIntire, Salem, Massachusetts," watercolor and gouache on fibrous handmade gray-tan paper with deckled edges, circa 1920s, signed in the image at lower left "FWS"; signed in pencil beneath the image "F. Wenderoth Saunders" and inscribed "Pingree House, Built 1804, From designs by Samuel McIntire," image size (including painted double border) approx. 12-1/2" x 9", sheet size 15-1/4" x 11-1/2", mounted to thin cardboard and housed in the original mat (concealing inscription and full signature) and mahogany frame (without glass) measuring 18-3/8" x 15-1/8" overall
A faithful, carefully rendered view of this important Federal-style landmark, built in 1804 by famed Salem architect/carver Samuel McIntire for John and Sarah Gardner. The house later passed into the hands of Captain Joseph White (1814) and David Pingree (1834). In 1933 Pingree's descendants gifted the house to the Essex Institute, and it is now owned by the Peabody Essex Museum.
Saunders began his art studies at Massachusetts Normal Art School (now Massachusetts College of Art and Design) and went on to earn degrees from Harvard, as well as additional studies (on a Harvard Fellowship) in Europe and with Allen Philbrick at the Chicago Art Institute. Prolific as an illustrator for books and magazines, Saunders was also a longtime teacher, living and working in Cuba, Massachusetts, New York, and Maine. He is best known for his images of steam locomotives, New England architecture, and seascapes and coastal scenes. In 1958 he was elected to the Guild of Boston Artists.
Notes: CONDITION: Mounting as noted; light toning; light wear to frame, otherwise fine, clean, attractive condition. Note that while there is no staining or burn from the mat, it is not acid-free and should be replaced, which will also allow a larger aperture to be cut so that the full signature is also visible.
