Superb pair of mid-Victorian ladies' and gentlemen's parlor chairs in the manner of Belter or Meeks, circa 1850s, bent laminated rosewood in the Rococo Revival taste, each deeply and elaborately carved with fruit, foliate, and scroll motifs, cabriole legs, the gentleman's chair with arms terminating in knuckled hand rests, both seats and backs stuffed with horsehair covered in old (not original) velvet upholstery in pale peach, the gentlemen's chair measuring approx. 41-1/2" tall by 25" wide by 32" deep overall, the ladies' chair measuring 39" x 20" x 25".
An exceptional pair with the highest-quality carving of the period.
Notes: Scattered surface blemishes (scratches and small scars, nicks, small cracks, tack holes from previous upholstery, disturbances to finish, etc.); light soiling to upholstery (no major staining); otherwise very good, sturdy condition, with no breaks or losses of note.
