Bernadine Custer (American, 1900–1991): "Babies and Flowers," and watercolor on paper, circa 1935, unsigned (identified in ink on the dust seal on the reverse), sight size 13-5/8" x 10", attractively framed under glass with giltwood and a double mat to an overall size of 19-5/8" x 16".
The nature of the repetitions in the design suggests that the present work was produced as a design for wallpaper or a textile. Custer, born in Illinois, studied at Illinois State University and the Art Institute of Chicago. An instructor at the Pratt Institute, Custer produced commercial art and illustrations for the New Yorker, Pageant, Seventeen, New Republic, Fiction Parade, Survey Geographic, and other publications. During the WPA era she created post office murals at Woodstock, Vermont and Summerville, South Carolina, as well as other artworks under the auspices of the Treasury Art Project, Federal Artist's Project, and Public Works of Art Project. Widely exhibited in both group and solo shows in her lifetime, Custer's works are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Smithsonian Museum of American Art, Whitney Museum, Detroit Institute of Arts, Addison Gallery of American Art at Phillips Andover Academy, and Williams College.
