Paul M. Hollister (American, 1918–2004): "Third Avenue El" [New York City Scene; Estate No. 890], oil on canvas, 2002, signed and dated at lower left "Hollister '02"; signed again on the reverse, which also bears the estate stamp on the stretcher, 18" x 14".
About the artist: A 1941 graduate of Harvard with a major in Fine Art, Paul Hollister, a critic, editor, scholar, and artist, was renowned as the author of several definitive works on the history of glass, including The Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights and Glass Paperweights: An Old Craft Revived, as well as hundreds of articles. As a visual artist Hollister demonstrated versatility in a number of styles and media, ranging from realism to abstract realism to pure abstraction, from pastels to oils. During his lifetime, Hollister's works were exhibited in the Whitney Museum, Galerie Apollinaire (London), Riverside Museum, New York City Center, Los Angeles Art Association, Fort Worth Art Association, Pastel Society of Toronto, and numerous other galleries, and his work is in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), Montana Museum (Helena), and other collections.
Provenance: Estate of the artist.
CONDITION: In very fine, stable condition, with no losses or restorations.
