Paul Basilius Barth (Swiss, 1881–1955): "Cows at the Seashore (Beach Scene)," original stone lithograph (artist's proof) on cream wove paper, circa 1940s–1950s, inscribed in pencil at lower left "epreuve d'artiste," signed at lower right "P. Barth," image size 17-1/4" x 11-1/2", sheet size 21-7/8" x 14-3/4".
Barth, born in Basel, studied at the Kunstakademie in Munich and at the painting school run by Heinrich Knirr. After additional travel and work in Italy, he entered the Académie Julian in Paris. A member of the Société du Salon d'Automne, Barth maintained a studio in Riehen, Switzerland in the last decades of his life. Among other notable exhibitions, his works were included in the International Art Exhibition of the Munich Secession in 1911, the Venice Biennale (1920 and 1926), and the Kunsthaus Zurich (1925, 1938, 1952). He is also represented in a number of European museum collections.
Notes: CONDITION: Light handling wear to sheet (faint marginal crease to upper left corner; clear tear to top edge, outside of plate, with tape repair to reverse; some unobtrusive surface impressions); otherwise clean, attractive, and very good overall.
