Scarce and interesting antique stamping or branding iron, American, 19th century, of wrought iron in the form of a name block reading “R. H. Stickney” with narrow shaft terminating in a loop, approx. 14-1/8” long overall, the signature stamp approx. 3-1/4” wide.
A striking example of a type used as a maker’s or ownership brand for furniture, tools, and crates and boxes, as well as for marking stoneware or pottery. While I am uncertain as to the precise origin of the item, nineteenth-century records from an R. H. Stickney Co. are in the archives of the University of Alabama. The name R. H. Stickney also appears in the records of the Stickney Family of Faunsdale Plantation, Marengo County, Alabama.
CONDITION: Typical oxidation and pitting to surface commensurate with age, and slight bending to shaft, otherwise fine condition.
