Fine and lovely bust-length pastel portrait of a woman, American, 19th century, sight size 15" x 11-1/2", housed under glass in the original gilded frame measuring 17-1/2" x 13-7/8" overall, signed in pencil at lower left, "G. Waldon Smith."
G. Waldon Smith was a photographer working in Boston in the 19th and early 20th centuries. While the present work appears to be a fully original drawing, and one accomplished with considerable skill, Smith's occupation suggests that it may a "crayon portrait," a hybrid work in which pastels were used atop a photograph to enhance certain effects and even to create new ones. (If a photo was used as the foundation for this drawing, there is no telltale trace whatsoever, and the pastels are richly textured and sensitively rendered throughout.)
Notes: Some wear and surface losses to frame, otherwise fine, clean condition, with strong colors and no evident damages to drawing
