Scarce and striking antique toothbrush holder/razor box by Haviland, Limoges, France, 1850s–1860s, porcelain in rounded oblong form, the lid molded with stylized vines and elongated bud finial and pierced with small ventilation holes, the interior with ledges for two brushes, the body and lid with gilt striping and accents, approx. 8-1/4" x 3-1/2" x 3-3/4" overall, the bottom with raised plaque reading "Haviland [Depose] (partly glazed over but still visible).
This Haviland mark is the firm's earliest, beginning in 1853 and used into the early 1860s. A rarely seen and particularly early example of this distinctive form from this legendary maker, perfect for repurposing to hold pens, paintbrushs, or other desk/art supplies; as a potpourri holder; or for any number of other storage or serving applications.
CONDITION: A bit of scattered rubbing to gilt, otherwise fine, attractive condition, with no cracks, chips, or crazing.
