Charming antique Staffordshire figure of "Nell," circa 1840, hand-painted with pink luster detailing, depicting a seated woman wearing cap, shawl, and flowered dress, holding a pitcher and cup, a cat peeping out from under her seat, 6-1/4" tall.
The present figure was typically paired with her husband, Jobson, a cobbler. The characters were originally introduced in a 1731 ballad farce titled The Devil to Pay: Or, the Wives Metamorphos'd. The play remained popular into the early decades of the nineteenth century.
Notes: CONDITION: In fine, attractive condition, with no cracks or chips.
