ANTIQUE PARQUETRY INLAID BOX, AMERICAN, 1870s - 1880s

Fabulous antique parquetry inlaid box, American, circa 1870s–1880s, the box of flecked maple construction with pine bottom, the top inlaid with various geometrics in contrasting woods, brass hinges and latch hook, the interior of the lid with large original label printed in gold against purple "Superior School Colors, Warranted Soft and Brilliant," the overall dimensions 10" x 6-5/8" x 1-3/4".

A splendid example of folk-art resourcefulness. Originally sold as a partitioned box containing pans of watercolors, the lid of the present example was later "recycled" as a canvas to display the maker's skill with inlay—here comprising hundreds of tiny pieces. Found in south central New Hampshire.

CONDITION: Mild surface wear (a few minor scuffs and impressions; a single small, unobtrusive loss to string inlay along back edge of lid at upper left corner); traces of former fittings to interior; otherwise fine, attractive, sturdy condition, with rich, pleasing, untouched original patina.
