Rare and stunning antique handbag or purse, American, 19th–early 20th century, crocheted of heavy ecru thread in radiating circular form resembling a stylized flower with several egg-shaped pendants, knotted drawstring handles, the lining of a similarly colored heavy grosgrain fabric, the overall dimensions approx. 12" long (excluding drawstring) by 7-1/2" wide.
An exquisitely made example in a splendid state of preservation. Accompanied by a handwritten card of provenance reading "This lovely bag was made by Sheila's Great Grandmother, Henrietta Courter Dickinson in N.Y.C." Genealogy references suggest that the likely maker was a woman of this name (seen in the last photo above; for reference only, not included) who was born in 1841 in Cobleskill, Schoharie County, New York and died in New York City on January 14, 1916.
A handsome example with unusual documentation for the collector of antique clothing or accessories!-
CONDITION: In very fine, sturdy, beautifully preserved condition, with no evident damages, flaws, or losses.
