Alma Brooks Phillips Hale (American, 1896–1948): "Dogwood Blossoms," watercolor on paper, 1915, unsigned (identified with a handwritten ink caption from the dust seal of an earlier framing now preserved on the reverse), sight size 11-5/8" x 11-5/8", attractively presented under glass in a mat and handsome vintage giltwood frame measuring 17-7/8" x 17-7/8" overall.
Hale was born in Hawkins, Tennessee, on April 8, 1896. In 1916 she married Judge Winfield Berry Hale, Jr., who had a long and distinguished political career that included mayor of Rogersville, Tennessee, a official of the State Democratic Committee, and special assistant to the United States Attorney General. After a long tenure on the Tennessee Court of Appeals, Hale accepted his most high-profile position, as one of the judges at the Nuremberg Trials in 1947–48. Alma Hale died in Rogersville in 1948, at the age of 52.
Work by identified Tennessee artists from this early date is quite uncommon.
Notes: Mild surface wear to frame, otherwise fine, attractive condition (not examined outside frame)
