In 1938, Charles H. Hubbell was commissioned by Cleveland's Thompson Products Company, a manufacturer of automotive and aviation products, to create a series of paintings for a calendar to commemorate past winners of the Thompson Cup air races. These were well-received, so Hubbell continued to produce artwork for Thompson Products advertising calendars for years to come.
